 Selah Support Foundation is a Non-Governmental organization in Nigeria that is committed to providing relationship guidance to youths and adults (Selah Initiative), supporting vulnerable elderly (Grey Hairs Initiative), caring for vulnerable children (Gems Initiative), as well as advocating for supporting pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers who desire to thrive (Emerald Light Initiative). Emerald Light Initiative is a project of Selah Support Foundation that was established to give pregnant teenagers and adolescent mothers second chances at life. The organisation believes that an isolated event of unplanned pregnancy ought not to attract capital punishment such as a shattered destiny.
Taking into cognisance the fact that the well being of the unborn child is affected by the quality of emotional, physical, health, and spiritual care given to the accidental mother, the organisation has embraced damage control measures. Using these measures, they are pragmatic enough to acknowledge the errors of the teenage girl and her partner, and more importantly, are committed to ensuring that the destinies of the teenage girl and her unborn child do not suffer as a result of the pregnancy. To achieve this, the organisation focuses on: 1. Giving mental, social, emotional, educational, financial support and empowerment through; a. Counselling (on/offline) pregnant/young moms and their parents/families b. Support group for pregnant/young moms and parents/families c. Mentorship program spearheaded by those who were once “victims” d. The provision of accompanier to their first two ante-natal and post-natal visits e. After School coaching f. Financial assistance towards schooling, trading, or apprenticeship re-enrolment. 2. Creating awareness about the detrimental effects of toxic attitudes and stigmatisation on pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers, as well as on their family members. 3. Creating awareness about the effects of unsafe abortion 4. Offering comprehensive sexual and relationship education. 6. Partnering with other NGOS with related visions There is a need for maximum support from families, schools, religious bodies, and the entire society to ensure that pregnant teenagers are not ostracised and alienated from the support systems they dearly need.
