The Nigerian Senate on March 15, 2016 rejected the gender equality bill for marriage sponsored by Senator Abiodun Olujimi. The bill titled "Gender Parity and Prohibition of Violence against Women" would seek equal rights for women in marriage, education and workplace.
The bill did not pass the second reading because majority of the senators voted against it. This led to a peaceful protest organized by Laila St Matthew Daniel to advocate for Gender Equality in Nigeria. The protest took place on March 23rd in Lagos.
