Kano-LEADS Has Called On Kano State Government To Combat Climate Change

The Kano Leadership, Enlightenment, and Advocacy for Development Initiative is a non-governmental organization in Nigeria that has called on the Kano state government to combat climate change and address environmental challenges.​

The delegation, led by Secretary-General Alh. Abubakar Sadik Umar emphasized the critical need for collaborative action to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and address pressing environmental concerns in Kano State. 
We urge proactive measures to combat the environmental impact of roadside refuse dumping,” he said.
He proposed the establishment of a refuse collection company and advocated for household registration for weekly garbage collection and recycling.

Furthermore, Alh. Umar added that it is crucial to leverage various media platforms to disseminate information effectively.
He proposed a policy mandating tree planting for individuals purchasing land in Kano State for building purposes, aiming to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Engr. Babangida Lamido, while speaking, raised concerns regarding improper ventilation in certain areas of Kano, particularly in light of the projected rise in temperatures to 46°C between March 15 and April 1, 2024. 

Alh. Musa Maigari also highlighted the health risks associated with unregulated bone burning at the abattoir market and stressed the importance of public education on the harmful effects of such practices.

In response, Hon. Nasiru Sule Garo, the Commissioner of the Ministry for Environment and Climate Change, applauded KANO-LEADS for their commitment to environmental advocacy. 

We are actively considering proposals to convert refuse into wealth through recycling initiatives, assured Garo. 
He also reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to collaboration with KANO-LEADS and other stakeholders to address environmental challenges and foster sustainable development in Kano State. 
He pledged to document and review all suggestions received for possible implementation under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
