On the 1st and 2nd of September 2023, many families who had lost hope of undergoing surgery for their life-threatening conditions were given a new lease on life as Havana Specialist Hospital, a multi-disciplinary medical facility situated in the heart of Surulere committed to providing innovative and premier healthcare services to patients across a range of medical specialties conducted free hernia and fibroid surgeries. The hospital believes that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right and it is essential for promoting economic productivity. Noting that when individuals are healthy, they are more likely to work, contribute to the economy, and support their families. The reality of untreated illnesses, on the other hand, can lead to reduced productivity and increased healthcare costs.
In a partnership with Rucomef Foundation, a Christian NGO with access to the less privileged in the society, the convergence of the people who needed the surgery was facilitated. Chief Medical Director of Havana Specialist Hospital, Dr Mrs Ijeoma Iwuala, expressed that, “Access to quality healthcare Services, Community Support, Healthcare Accessibility, Hope and Relief, Community Collaboration and Promoting Health Equity are the things that motivated the hospital to facilitate the surgeries.” The goodwill from the partnership has reduced health disparity and ensured that selected patients regardless of their socio-economic status had access to quality healthcare services. The medical facility further encourages healthcare providers and institutions to focus on efficiency, effectiveness, equitable care delivery, and value the well-being of all societal members, thereby fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
