Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) is a non-profit, private-driven initiative committed to fighting hunger through targeted programs that improve the nutrition of pregnant women and their infants; students in schools and the youths in underserved communities. On Saturday, 27th of August, 2022, the organization hosted a walkathon tagged “Feed the future 4.0” to raise money for the Education Enhancement Intervention for Food Insecure Students (EDUFOOD) program. The event started by 8.00am with the registration and tagging of volunteers. After this, a face painting session was held to help volunteers interact and pictures were taken by a photo wall.
In preparation for the walk, there was a quick workout session, led by celebrities including Pamilerin, Enioluwa ‘Lipgloss boy’ Adeoluwa, Alex ‘Unusual’ Asogwa, Leo Dasilva and Jodie. After the energizing workout session, Nollywood actress, Foluke Daramola, came on stage to deliver a brief charge. She encouraged everyone to remember why the walk was being held and encouraged volunteers not to lose sight of the goal which is to raise awareness about hunger. Next, the founder of Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Mr Michael Sunbola came on stage to share the vision; which is to keep school children fed. A reason which he stated was very personal to him as he came from a disadvantaged background where feeding was sometimes a challenge for his family. He also encouraged volunteers to give their best during the walk as funds raised would ensure that more children do not go hungry. After this, he called on the programs director of the EDUFOOD program to share what the program is about and how volunteers can contribute. The objectives of the walk are listed below: 1.To raise awareness about the menace of hunger and malnutrition among school children 2.To raise more funds to scale the school feeding program 3. To increase school attendance through food security in low cost schools. 4.To reduce dropout school rates, develop the student’s health, and increase their ability to comprehend in class 5. To raise awareness about the importance of school feeding programs for low cost schools At this point, it was time for the walk to commence. Volunteers were directed to remain on the pedestrian part of the road and the walk commenced from the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos State. The procession moved through the highbrow area of Ikoyi, from Awolowo way, through Falomo to Bourdillion. The volunteers stopped at the Bourdillion roundabout to properly display their various banners to draw the attention of commuters to the cause. After this, the volunteers headed back to the kick off point at TBS. The walkathon was a 12km walk in its entirety and ended on a high note.
