The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has reported significant achievements over the past year, arresting, arraigning, and convicting 10,266 offenders through the Special Offences (Mobile) Court. This was announced by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), during a press briefing commemorating the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term. In the past year, the DSVA addressed 4,641 adult domestic violence cases, 2,976 cases involving children, 118 rape cases, and rescued 64 individuals. Additionally, the agency secured over 50 judgments and 36 restraining orders, handled 652 social welfare cases, mediated 107 disputes, and reached over 800,000 people through advocacy and sensitization programs.
The Lagos State government also secured over 320 favorable judgments and approved 100 plea bargains. The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) achieved 230 judgments in favor of the state, the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) secured 40 judgments, and the DSVA secured over 50 judgments. Pedro detailed the OPD's accomplishments, stating it obtained 230 judgments and managed 4,272 petitions and 1,788 various court cases across its offices. The OPD also addressed 1,812 child-related cases, 316 domestic violence cases, and conducted 29 rescue missions. Additionally, the office handled 1,988 cases from court and correctional centers, successfully concluding 448 of them, and received N59,326,549 on behalf of clients and beneficiaries. The DPP secured 40 judgments and 11 plea bargains, with seven cases struck out and four others discharged. The Directorate received 377 files for legal advice, issuing advice for 229 cases, with 148 files pending. Furthermore, the Directorate for Citizens’ Rights received 755 family matter petitions, 131 employee/employer disputes, and 744 tenancy issues, resolving 539 family matters, 80 employee/employer disputes, and 577 tenancy matters. The Citizens’ Mediation Centre (CMC) handled 35,655 mediation matters, resolving 20,691, while 14,964 remained unresolved due to non-attendance. Pedro emphasized the agency's commitment to delivering justice irrespective of status or socio-economic background, reporting that the agency received N183,721,134 in debt settlements on behalf of parties involved.
