 Environment can be defined as the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. The term “environment” refers to all elements of the physical and biological world, as well as the interactions between them. Environment plays a pre-eminent role in the life cycle of human beings as human life is highly dependent on the environment which is why the World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.
The theme for this year's World Environment Day is Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience which will be hosted by The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Land degradation, desertification, and drought pose a serious threat to our planet's health. These interconnected issues impact food security, biodiversity, and contribute to climate change. Desertification, the process by which fertile land becomes desert, affects billions of people worldwide. Droughts, periods of abnormally dry weather, are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, further straining our ecosystems. Some of the steps we can follow to maintain our environment includes; reducing, reusing and recycling of waste materials, volunteering for cleanups in your community, and also ensure you learn more on how to conserve the environment, plant, trees etc. This holiday was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, as a platform to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and encourage global action. The first one was a conference held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 where pressing matters were debated and discussed. Since then, from 1973, the tradition has continued on the same date.
