Autism is a lifelong developmental disability impacting communication and interaction with the world. With no actual cause , it is often attributed to genetic factors. In Nigeria, over 100,000 cases are recorded annually, with symptoms ranging from social communication challenges to sensory sensitivities and anxiety.
Each individual with autism experiences the condition uniquely, with triggers varying from person to person.

Recognizing the importance of raising awareness and support, the UN General Assembly designated April 2nd as World Autism Day in 2008.

This year's theme, "The Color Blue," symbolizes understanding and acceptance, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding autism. It emphasizes that autistic individuals are valuable members of society, capable of leading fulfilling lives and achieving any level of intelligence.

Contrary to common misconceptions, autism is not caused by vaccines, bad parenting, or contagious infections.

NGOs in Nigeria, such as the Zeebah Foundation, Ike Foundation for Autism, and National Society for Autism Nigeria, provide crucial support to children and individuals with autism and related special needs.

In conclusion, patience, understanding, and support are essential when interacting with autistic individuals. Strategies such as meditation, exercise, and deep breathing can also aid in managing the challenges associated with autism.
