There is no celebration of Children’s Day without mothers. Without mothers there won’t be children to celebrate. This was a statement made by Adefunke Adewunmi, the convener of The Black Diamond Support Foundation, an NGO that choose to empower women in other to commemorate the children’s day celebration. The women are residents of Agboyi Ketu , a riverine community in Lagos State. The NGO empowered no less than 200 women.
The women were taught various skills like soap making, bead making and baking. The skill acquisition program was conducted over a 3 day period. The children were also not left out as over 500 children were fed by the NGO. The children were given food, water bottles and other gift items packed in bags in order to give them a feel of what their more privileged peers were enjoying at the time. The Black Diamond Support foundation was established after the death of Mrs Apeke Adewumi, who lived her life serving the poor and needy.
