Afterschool Centre for Career Development joined over 13,000 women globally to mark the 2017 Global Mentoring Walk. The walk in Calabar was part of the 117 walks held concurrently on Saturday, March 11th, 2017 in 60 countries. The Vital Voices Global Mentoring Walk provided an environment for aspiring young women to gain the support and guidance that they need to fulfil their goals, as mentoring is proven to be one of the most important steps to establishing a successful career. Preceding the Walk was a weeklong activities comprising a Mentoring Brunch for Mentors and Mentees, the Fashion Value Chain Workshop and Girls Technology Tour at Government Secondary School, Anantigha and Government Technical School, Mayne Avenue Street while the Mentoring Dinner & Impact Awards is billed for April 30th 2017. Aimed at providing effective support system to help overcome the obstacles to career growth that women commonly face in corporate and professional environments, such as experiencing the “glass ceiling” effect and limited networking options the Global Mentoring Walk further strengthened intergenerational and gender – based shadowing amongst women, inspired a new cadre of women leaders/entrepreneurs and amplified the significance of all women in our local, national and international policy. The Mentoring walk in Calabar featured prominent Women leaders such as Justina Ovat, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State on Tourism Development & General Manager, Tinapa, Christabel Ndubisi, CEO Bella Water, Liz Udie, Executive Council Member of the Calabar Carnival Commission, Juliet Ufot, Curator, Global Shapers Calabar Hub, Enwongo Abasi Okon, a Director at the Micro Enterprise Development Agency, Calabar. Speaking on the essence of the Mentoring Walk, the Founder/ Faculty Lead, Afterschool Centre for Career Development and Flagbearer of the Walk in Nigeria, Esther Eshiet charged mentees to make good use of their mentoring relationships within the next three months. “This platform is established for you to excel and success is a personal responsibility; therefore go ahead and make your mentors proud” The Walk was delivered in partnership with BudgIT, Ekondo Microfinance Bank and The Rod & Staff Company.
