Every year, the world loses an estimated 727,000 people to suicide, with countless more attempting to take their own lives. Each case is a profound tragedy, leaving behind a ripple of grief that touches families, friends, communities, and even entire nations. The impact is long-lasting, often reshaping the lives of those left behind.
Suicide affects people at every stage of life, yet it is especially devastating among the youth. In 2021, it was the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally. The problem is not confined to wealthy nations — in fact, nearly three-quarters (73%) of all suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting the urgent need for a united global response.

In recognition of this challenge, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 through a collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). Observed annually on September 10, WSPD serves as a rallying point for advocacy, education, and action. Governments, health organizations, and community groups around the world organize activities aimed at raising awareness, breaking the silence, and reinforcing one crucial message: suicide is preventable.

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 is “Changing the Narrative”, continuing the global focus for World Suicide Prevention Month from 2024 to 2026. This theme calls on individuals, communities, and leaders to challenge harmful myths, confront stigma, and create safe spaces for open, honest conversations about suicide. By shifting how we talk about mental health and suicidal thoughts, the aim is to foster understanding, encourage help-seeking, and ultimately save lives.

Addressing suicide requires compassion, education, and collective effort. On this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day, we are reminded that through awareness, empathy, and action, we can all play a role in changing the narrative — and in doing so, change the outcome for someone in need.
