World Diabetes Day 2025

World Diabetes Day (WDD), led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign, observed every 14 November—the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin.

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable and manageable, while Type 1 diabetes is not preventable but requires lifelong insulin for effective control.

Created in 1991 by the IDF and the World Health Organization, and officially recognised by the UN in 2006, WDD raises global attention to the rising burden of diabetes. The campaign continues to unite governments, organisations, and communities through screenings, education drives, media campaigns, and community events.

This year’s theme, part of the 2024–2026 cycle, is “Diabetes and Well-Being,” emphasising physical, mental, and societal well-being as key pillars for healthier lives.

• World Diabetes Day encourages individuals and communities to take simple, meaningful steps.
  

• Get screened to understand your blood sugar status.
  

• Adopt healthier habits—stay active, choose balanced meals, and reduce sugar intake.
  

• Raise awareness by sharing verified information or wearing blue, the official colour of WDD.
  

• Support someone living with diabetes by checking in, offering encouragement, or helping them access care.
  

As diabetes continues to rise globally, World Diabetes Day serves as a reminder that awareness, prevention, and compassion can save lives and build healthier communities.
