Each year on August 26, the United States marks Women’s Equality Day, a commemoration of one of the most significant milestones in the nation’s history: the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. This landmark amendment prohibits both the federal and state governments from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex, securing a constitutional guarantee that American women had long fought for.
The date was chosen to honour August 26, 1920, when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby signed the proclamation granting women the constitutional right to vote. Women’s Equality Day was first celebrated in 1971 and formally designated by Congress in 1973. Since then, it has been proclaimed annually by the President of the United States.

Beyond celebrating the hard-won achievements of the suffrage movement, Women’s Equality Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for full gender equality. While the right to vote was a monumental victory, advocates stress that true equality encompasses broader issues — including equal pay, access to education, reproductive rights, and protection from gender-based discrimination and violence.

The day stands as both a tribute to the courage and resilience of those who fought for women’s rights and a call to action for future generations to continue advancing equality in every sphere of life.
