In a determined push to eliminate preventable childhood diseases, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched an integrated immunization campaign in Taraba State, targeting over one million children under the age of five. The campaign, flagged off in Jalingo as part of the National Immunization Plus Days, is designed to protect children against polio and other life-threatening diseases. It also aims to improve vaccine coverage, especially in remote and underserved communities across the state.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office, underscored the urgency and importance of the initiative. “Today marks a crucial moment for every child in Taraba. Polio remains a serious threat, but with consistent vaccination, eradication is possible,” she said. Dr. Rafique emphasized that this year marks UNICEF’s final phase of support for polio vaccination in the region. “We must not leave a single child behind. Parents—especially mothers and fathers—have a key role to play. Please make your children available for vaccination. The world is watching Nigeria, and together, we can achieve polio eradication,” she added. The campaign represents a critical step toward securing a healthier future for Taraba’s children and strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to global health goals. Source: GUARDIAN NG
