In a concerted effort to address the challenges faced by girls in Nigeria, UN Women, in collaboration with His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu (V), the Obong of Calabar, urged the government to prioritize girls' education, establish empowerment programs, and strengthen legal protections. On Tuesday in Calabar, UN Women, alongside the Ford Foundation, hosted a town hall meeting in observance of this year's International Day of the Girl Child, themed “Girl’s Vision for the Future.”
At the event, UN Women representative Ms. Beatrice Eyong, conveyed by Ms. Kenechukwu Asuku, emphasized that providing quality education for all girls and young women is a fundamental human right and a crucial global development priority. She urged leaders to support girls in realizing their ambitions, advocating for education as a pathway to empowerment rather than allowing circumstances that lead to early marriage, servitude, or abuse. The Obong of Calabar also highlighted the need to raise awareness about the significance of girls' education, particularly in rural communities, underscoring the critical role it plays in the overall development of society.
