In a tragic event that has left the Plateau State Government deeply saddened, a school building in Jos, the state capital, collapsed on Friday morning. The incident at Saint Academy, located in the Busa Buji community, has resulted in the confirmed deaths of 17 people, with over 120 more trapped under the rubble. The collapse occurred around 8:30 am while students and teachers were in their classrooms, according to reports from PUNCH Online. In a statement released on Friday, Musa Ashoms, the state Commissioner for Information, provided an update on the situation, revealing that rescue operations are ongoing.
"The Plateau State Government is deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Saint Academy in Jos. A building collapse has led to casualties, with injured students and teachers still being evacuated to various hospitals within Jos," the statement read. Ashoms emphasized that the incident could have been avoided, citing the school's weak structural integrity and its unsafe location near a riverbank as contributing factors. Despite the tragedy, he commended the efforts of NEMA, SEMA, the Red Cross, and security agencies in rescuing trapped individuals and transporting them to medical facilities. In response to the disaster, the government has instructed hospitals to prioritize the treatment of the injured without requiring documentation or payment.
