The TA Community, a non-governmental organisation, has trained 246 market women across selected markets in Ilorin under its Tech for Market Women (T4MW) Initiative, aimed at improving financial literacy and digital business management among informal traders.
According to the project director, Mr. Tunmise Johnson, over 300 women were reached during the pilot phase, with 246 completing the training. He explained that participants were taught practical financial literacy, basic internet use, and simple digital tools to help them manage daily trading activities more efficiently. About 100 of the women now actively use the She-balance mobile application to record income, expenses, savings, and loans.

Johnson added that 18 trained mentors, drawn from the programme, now serve as peer educators, helping other market women learn recordkeeping, savings discipline, and financial planning across different markets in Ilorin.

The initiative, implemented in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation and Digital Opportunity Trust, is designed to improve financial inclusion and help traders build structured, scalable businesses. Project Officer Mr. Jessie Mathias-Bala noted that proper recordkeeping could also improve access to funding opportunities, including loans and grants.

The programme has received positive reactions from stakeholders. The Kwara State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Afolashade Opeyemi, commended the initiative, stressing the importance of women in driving economic growth and reducing poverty. Similarly, the Iyaloja-General of Kwara, Hajia Muyibat AbdulRaheem, urged participants to apply the knowledge gained to strengthen their businesses.

The T4MW initiative continues to focus on equipping women in the informal sector with digital and financial skills to enhance business resilience and long-term economic empowerment.
