In a bid to restore livelihoods lost to last year’s devastating flood in Maiduguri and its environs, the non-governmental organisation SOS Children’s Village has empowered hundreds of women with climate-smart agricultural skills, aimed at helping them rebuild their lives and achieve economic stability.
The flood, which struck in September last year, displaced numerous families across Borno State, destroying homes, farmlands, and sources of income. Many survivors, especially women and children, were left without shelter or food, relying on neighbours for daily sustenance.

Speaking after a media tour of the organisation’s projects across Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas, the Humanitarian Action Manager of SOS Children’s Villages, Fredson Ogbeson, revealed that the NGO has so far extended humanitarian assistance to more than 18,000 residents, including children and vulnerable families.

According to Ogbeson, the support provided includes conditional and unconditional cash transfers, agricultural inputs, protection services, and hygiene awareness campaigns, alongside start-up kits to aid recovery and self-reliance.

He emphasised that the initiative reflects SOS Children’s Village’s commitment to helping communities build resilience against future climate-related shocks and ensuring that affected families regain sustainable means of livelihood.
