More than 18,000 smallholder farmers across Nasarawa State benefited from climate-resilient agricultural technologies, biofortified crops and market access initiatives implemented by the Sasakawa Africa Association, SAA, in 2025.
The organisation disclosed this during an official visit by its delegation to the Nasarawa State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Lafia.

SAA-Nigeria Country Director, Dr Godwin Atser, who was represented by the Coordinator for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Agri-Systems, Mr Nathaniel Otene, highlighted the organisation’s key achievements in the state over the past year.

In the area of nutrition and post-harvest management, Programme Officer Dr Moshood Sulaiman said SAA promoted chemical-free grain storage solutions, including Purdue Improved Crop Storage, or PICS, bags and converted plastic water tanks designed to preserve grains for extended periods.

He said the organisation was also promoting nutrient-dense crops such as Provitamin A maize, zinc millet and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, with a focus on improving nutrition among women of reproductive age and children under five.

On market access, Programme Officer Mr Jonathan Yassah said 18,900 farmers received training to manage their farms as viable commercial enterprises.

The initiatives are part of SAA’s broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience, improve nutrition and connect smallholder farmers to sustainable agricultural markets in Nasarawa State.
