As part of the 2024 Rotary Family Health Days, the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in the Awka Axis, under Anambra Zone of Rotary International District 9142, provided free medical services to local residents. This outreach event took place on Saturday at the Umuogbunu village town hall in Awka. Rotarian Agubata Ekene, President of the Rotary Club of Awka Central, addressed the media on behalf of the Rotary Presidents following the event. He explained that this initiative is a collaborative effort organized by Rotary International District 9124 in partnership with various clubs within the Anambra Zone. The outreach is being implemented at three key locations: Nnewi, Onitsha, and Awka.
Seven clubs participated in the initiative, including the Rotary Clubs of Awka Central, Awka Urban, Awka GRA, Igbariam Gateway, Amawbia Sports Club, Awka Metropolis, and the Rotaract E-Club of East Land. Ekene emphasized that the outreach aligns with Rotary International’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. The initiative aims to deliver essential medical services to underprivileged groups lacking access to regular healthcare. In addition to medical services, the Rotary Club is also offering education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics to those in need.The free outreach services are ongoing across the three senatorial districts of the state. Services provided during the event included malaria prevention, eye exams, HIV testing, screenings for hypertension and diabetes, deworming for children, breast cancer awareness, dental care, prostate cancer screening, vitamin A administration, hepatitis B and C testing, and the distribution of sanitary pads and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to beneficiaries.
