Plan International Nigeria, in partnership with the Hope and Rural Aid Foundation (HARAF), has trained 293 youths in various vocational skills and provided them with start-up cash grants upon graduation in Borno and Adamawa States. Speaking during the graduation ceremony themed “Seeds of Change” in Maiduguri, Head of Humanitarian Programmes at Plan International, Emmanuel Nuhu, highlighted the alarming rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria, especially in the Northeast, where years of conflict have disrupted education and economic stability.
He noted that as of 2020, the national youth unemployment rate stood at 33.3 percent, with Borno and Adamawa recording even higher figures due to prolonged insecurity and displacement. To address this challenge, Nuhu explained that Plan International established four Livelihood Incubation Centres (LICs) across Damboa and Mafa LGAs in Borno, and Girei and Fufore LGAs in Adamawa. The initiative was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented under the Youth Learn, Earn and Prosper in the Lake Chad Region project. According to him, the programme aims to equip young people with practical skills, financial support, and entrepreneurial knowledge to rebuild their lives and contribute to community development.
