In this inspiring interview, we at NigerianNGO engaged Opeyemi Idowu, a child welfare and empowerment expert and the founder of The Glow Foundation. Driven by a deep sense of purpose and compassion, Opeyemi shares how a simple act of celebrating birthdays in orphanages led to the birth of a nonprofit dedicated to restoring dignity and possibility to children living in the shadows of society.
From building connections with children in slums and underserved communities to launching ambitious initiatives like a tuition-free secondary school, Opeyemi opens up about the journey, challenges, and personal convictions that fuel her mission. She also offers practical insights for aspiring changemakers and a powerful message of hope to those who feel forgotten.

Let’s dive into the conversation.

NigerianNGO: Tell us about yourself?

Opeyemi Idowu: My name is Opeyemi Idowu, I’m a child welfare and empowerment expert, Impact Strategist by training and the founder of The Glow Foundation. I’m deeply passionate about restoring hope and dignity to children who have been forgotten by society, those living on the streets, in slums, or in emotionally unsafe environments. I founded this organization because I believe every child deserves to feel loved, seen, and empowered to dream. My life’s mission is to be the voice and support I wish every vulnerable child had.

NigerianNGO: What inspired you to found the Glow Foundation?

Opeyemi Idowu: From a young age, I realized I had a natural ability to comfort children, especially in their most vulnerable moments. It started with my younger sister; just holding her in my arms would stop her from crying. Over time, I noticed this connection extended to other children too, especially as I became active in the children’s department at church. In 2019, I made a personal decision to celebrate every birthday at an orphanage. What began as a simple act of giving soon revealed itself as a divine calling. Each visit brought a deep sense of fulfillment and it became clear that I was meant to do more. I founded The Glow Foundation because I believe no child should feel forgotten, unloved, or invisible. Every child deserves to know that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved by God. I’m simply a vessel, walking in obedience to a vision much bigger than myself. I often say: “I want to be the adult I needed when I was a child.” That vision continues to guide every outreach we embark on.

NigerianNGO: What are some of the success stories from Glow Foundation?

Opeyemi Idowu: Every time we witness a child take their first step into a classroom with confidence, or a family receive food that brings relief and dignity, we count it as a success. We’ve supported children who had never held a pencil before, now learning to read and dream beyond their immediate environment. We've seen malnourished children bounce back with strength and joy after consistent feeding interventions. For us, success isn’t always loud- it’s in the restored smiles, renewed hope, and reawakened potential we see in every child and family we reach.

NigerianNGO: How does your organization receive support in terms of funding?

Opeyemi Idowu: As of now, The Glow Foundation is primarily funded by like-hearted individuals who believe in the mission and have made it a point of duty to contribute to our projects. We’ve also been blessed with partnerships from organizations like Yamaha/CFAO, Donors for Africa, Kotex, Oasis International, ZIV Luxury Conceirge and QueensBridge, among others. These collaborations help us extend our reach, strengthen our programs, and create more sustainable impact. We’re actively working toward building a broader donor base and institutional grant partnerships to scale our efforts; particularly our plan to build a tuition-free secondary school for secondary school students in Lagos.

NigerianNGO: What challenges have you faced in bringing the vision of The Glow Foundation to life?

Opeyemi Idowu: Every impactful vision comes with its own set of challenges. For us, the greatest ones have included:

● Funding consistency, especially as demand for our programs grows
● Accessing underserved areas, particularly floating communities and informal settlements
● Staffing and volunteer retention, as our work is emotionally and physically demanding
● Navigating bureaucracy and system delays, especially in education and healthcare partnerships But through every challenge, our faith, our team, and the stories of the children we serve have kept us going.

NigerianNGO: What events or projects do you have coming up in the near future?

Opeyemi Idowu: We’re currently preparing for:

●Our Annual Children’s Conference tagged “Spreading Love to 1000 kids 2.0”– a community-based outreach celebrating children’s creativity, health, and well-being
● And most importantly, we’re laying groundwork for our first tuition-free school project, which we hope to pilot within the next 12–18 months. We also run monthly micro-outreaches that provide food, hygiene kits, and psychosocial support across different settlements in Lagos.

NigerianNGO: What advice would you give to aspiring NGO founders?

Opeyemi Idowu: Start with compassion, but build with structure. Passion is essential, but without systems, your impact can’t be sustained. Also:
● Don’t wait to be “big”—start with the few lives you can touch now
● Surround yourself with people who share your values
● Stay focused on why you started—because the work will test your resolve
And most importantly, remember: impact isn’t in the spotlight, it’s in the quiet moments of service.

NigerianNGO: Do you have any words of encouragement to people who lack essential needs right now?

Opeyemi Idowu: Yes. You are not forgotten. It might feel like no one sees your struggle, but there are people—like us—who care and are working to create safety, dignity, and opportunities for you. Your current situation is not the end of your story. You are worthy of love, education, joy, and a future filled with possibility. Hold on. Help is on the way—and so is your glow.

NigerianNGO: For readers who want to support your work, what’s the best way to get involved?

Opeyemi Idowu: We welcome support in many forms, from donations and partnerships to volunteering and spreading the word.
