Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support for children and young adults with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Established in 2001, the foundation has been at the forefront of creating a nurturing environment for persons with Down syndrome for over 23 years. 1.Residential Resource Center They operate a residential resource center that provides a safe and loving home for children and young adults with Down syndrome, ensuring they receive the holistic care and support they need. 2. Early Medical Intervention Early medical intervention is a key aspect of their approach. In pursuit of this goal, they initiated a medical intervention program known as "Save a Life." This program sponsors children with Down syndrome who are born with heart defects, ensuring they have access to corrective heart surgeries. The program has already benefited more than 60 children along with their families, achieving a success rate of around 80%. They currently have more children eagerly waiting to benefit from this life-changing opportunity. 3. Educational Programs They are actively involved in educational programs aimed at raising awareness about Down syndrome and fostering an inclusive society that embraces diversity. They seek scholarship funds to support some of their indigent students. 4. Skills Development Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria is committed to empowering individuals with Down syndrome by providing them with opportunities for skill development, promoting independence, and self-sufficiency. Specifically, they operate vocational units including a bakery, poultry & fish farms, leatherworks, hair/barbing salon, and a music unit. 5. Advocacy They are passionate advocates for the rights and well-being of persons with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. Their advocacy efforts extend to challenging societal norms and promoting policies that foster inclusivity and equal opportunities.
