The Nigerian Red Cross Society is calling for national solidarity in the fight against disasters and hunger that afflict communities across the country. At a recent fundraising gala in Lagos, Society President Mr. Oluyemisi Adeaga highlighted the urgent need for compassionate individuals to unite in humanitarian efforts, noting that disasters transcend boundaries of faith, gender, and ethnicity. He expressed concern over the high vulnerability to hunger and disasters in Nigeria and led attendees in a moment of silence to honor volunteers who have lost their lives serving those in need, as well as the victims of recent floods and other calamities.
“We are gathered here not just for a fundraising dinner but for something far more meaningful,” Adeaga stated, emphasizing the collective responsibility to address these pressing issues. Mrs. Absa Faty Kane, the International Ambassador of the Swiss Red Cross and a founding member of Tiffany Circle West Africa, addressed the challenges facing youth today. She noted that chronic poverty and a loss of hope are pushing many young Nigerians to undertake dangerous journeys in search of a better future. “Disasters, including floods and droughts, are exacerbating the plight of communities, leaving basic needs unmet,” she said. Kane further urged the international community to strengthen collaboration in support of targeted programs that provide relief to those affected. Bhupinder Tomar, head of delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, reinforced the gravity of food insecurity in Nigeria. He emphasized that for millions, it is not merely a statistic but a daily struggle, particularly in rural and conflict-impacted regions. The event served as a reminder of the collective action required to combat the deepening crises of hunger and disaster in Nigeria. Source: TRIBUNE NG
