In a bid to foster inclusivity and support rehabilitation, the Ngene Umuoji Foundation, a non-governmental organization committed to improving the lives of vulnerable individuals, has donated essential items to over 2,000 inmates at the Male and Female Custodial Facilities in Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos. During the visit, the Maximum-Security Prison housed 2,121 inmates, while the Female Custodial Facility accommodated over 300. The donation, which took place amid prayers and celebrations, aimed to enhance the inmates' sense of belonging as they marked Eid-El-Fitr.
Among the donated items were cooked and uncooked rice, footwear, soap, soft drinks, perfume, biscuits, cleaning supplies, and cash. Additionally, the NGO extended its support to a music album produced by the inmates, further encouraging their creative expression. Speaking at the event, Chief Chuka Christian Mekaowulu, CEO of the Ngene Umuoji Foundation, urged the inmates to seize the empowerment and educational opportunities available to them. He emphasized the importance of personal development, encouraging them to prepare for a more productive life post-incarceration. The gesture underscores the foundation’s commitment to social welfare, particularly in providing hope and resources for marginalized individuals, including those within correctional facilities.
