On October 19, 2024, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government’s Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, marked a significant milestone with the 18th annual Walk For Nature. This year’s event, themed Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience, was held under the fitting slogan, "Our Land, Our Future Generation". The 4.5km walk aimed to promote awareness of a greener future and highlight the importance of a safe and sustainable environment for all. The day began with the walk itself, gathering participants to raise awareness about the need for a healthier environment. NCF also organized tree planting and donated refuse bins to the Lagos State Government, contributing to the vision of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos.
In his opening remarks, Mahamood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, emphasized the walk’s purpose—to engage citizens on the importance of conserving nature and promoting sustainability. Lagos Governor's Special Adviser on the Environment, Rotimi Akodu, echoed this sentiment, noting that humanity’s survival is deeply linked to the health of our natural environment. During an engaging interview, NCF Director General Joseph Onoja highlighted the personal responsibility each individual holds toward environmental conservation. He encouraged individuals to adopt meaningful habits, such as planting trees on special occasions, as a way to nurture a healthier environment. Bukunola Adebiyi, Chairman of NCF, also addressed participants, reminding organizations, communities, and individuals that they can each contribute toward land restoration. She referenced the United Nations Environment Program’s guidance, suggesting that a plant-friendly diet, for example, can contribute to environmental health. The Walk for Nature event reinforced themes of hope, collective responsibility, and environmental stewardship. The event concluded with a celebration of partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations that supports NCF’s mission.
