The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched the Consumer Safety Club at Government Secondary School, Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja, as part of its Catch Them Young initiative to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse. Representing NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, at the event, Dr. Paul Kamai, Deputy Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances (FCT), highlighted the urgency of tackling drug abuse, citing that 14.4% of Nigerians—about 14.3 million people—are affected. He stressed that teenagers are particularly vulnerable, and drug abuse is undermining socio-economic development, increasing crime, and destabilizing families.
The Catch Them Young programme aims to equip students with critical knowledge about controlled substances, the risks of drug abuse, and its consequences, including addiction, mental health disorders, and academic decline. It also seeks to empower students to resist peer pressure and seek help when needed. Prof. Adeyeye called on parents and teachers to play an active role in guiding students and fostering a safe environment for discussions on drug-related issues. Source: TRIBUNE
