 Today marks the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, a global observance dedicated to honoring the professionalism, dedication, and courage of the men and women who have served—and continue to serve—in UN peacekeeping operations around the world. It is also a solemn occasion to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace. The day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 57/129 on December 11, 2002, following a proposal from the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association and the Government of Ukraine. It was first observed in 2003.
May 29 was chosen to commemorate the founding of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948. UNTSO was the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission, created to monitor the ceasefire after the Arab-Israeli War, and it laid the foundation for the organization’s ongoing commitment to maintaining international peace and security. This year’s observance carries the theme “The Future of Peacekeeping,” reflecting a forward-looking dialogue on how peace operations can adapt to emerging global challenges. As the world evolves, the UN continues to explore innovative strategies to enhance the effectiveness, resilience, and responsiveness of peacekeeping missions in conflict-affected regions. The day serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action for the international community to support and strengthen peacekeeping efforts in pursuit of a more stable and secure world.
