In 1995, at the historic World Conference on Women in Beijing, nations came together to adopt the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive global blueprint for advancing the rights of women and girls. It was the first to boldly recognize girls’ rights as a priority.
Years later, on December 19, 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to shining a light on the challenges girls face, while celebrating their power, resilience, and potential.

Every girl has the right to a safe, healthy, and educated life not only during adolescence but throughout adulthood. When girls are supported, they become powerful agents of change: tomorrow’s leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, caregivers, and community builders.

Yet too many barriers remain. Millions of girls are still denied education. One in four is married before the age of 18. Many are silenced by violence, burdened by unpaid labor, or excluded by harmful stereotypes. Their struggles often go unseen, but when girls are empowered, societies thrive.

Today, girls are breaking boundaries. They are entrepreneurs, activists, and leaders of global movements. They are proving every day that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are leading today.

The 2025 theme, “The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” reminds us that girls are not victims of circumstance but shapers of the future.

This International Day of the Girl, let us do more than celebrate—let us act, share their stories, amplify their voices and achievements, advocate for change and create a safe space for girls to learn.
