The Godwin and Patricia Okeke Foundation has opened new digital classrooms and dormitories for around 8,000 people with disabilities at the Special School for the Deaf in Onitsha, Anambra State. Tobechi Onwubuche, the foundation's Programmes Development Manager, explained on Sunday that this initiative aims to provide basic education and an inclusive learning environment for people with disabilities, including those who are visually or hearing impaired.
The foundation built and donated the new dormitory and classrooms to the Diocese on the Niger of the Anglican Communion. These facilities are designed specifically for students with hearing impairments. Onwubuche highlighted that the new buildings will help students avoid long walks to school and reduce transportation costs, which often limit them to attending school only two or three times a week, causing them to miss classes. He stated, “There are an estimated 8,000 people with hearing impairments in Anambra State. The Special School for the Deaf in Odoakpu is managed by both the Anglican Mission and the Anambra State government. This new facility will help 40 to 50 percent of the students by reducing the need for long walks to school and high transportation costs, which currently force them to miss classes. This donation would go a long way in helping the PLWD in the state.
