 The Federal Government, in collaboration with TechnoServe Nigeria and other partners, has launched a new nutrition-focused initiative under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme. The project, tagged “Snack for Thought,” was unveiled at Magwan Special Primary School in Kano State to improve child nutrition, learning outcomes, and school attendance. According to a statement issued by the organisers, the pilot phase introduces nutritious breakfast meals for pupils in selected public schools, complementing the Federal Government’s upcoming lunch feeding programme.
TechnoServe Nigeria supported the feeding of more than 1,800 pupils across three pilot schools — Magwan Science Model Primary School, Race Course Science Model Primary School, and Ganduje Nomadic Primary School. The children were served locally prepared dishes made from whole-grain brown rice, including Kunu Geda (a rice and groundnut drink) and Garau Garau (a rice and beans meal). The statement highlighted that the meals are rich in fibre, vitamins, and essential minerals, aimed at promoting healthy growth, enhancing brain development, and strengthening the long-term impact of the national school feeding initiative. The “Snack for Thought” project, stakeholders noted, reinforces the government’s commitment to tackling child malnutrition while fostering better learning outcomes through improved nutrition in public schools.
