The Day of the African Child is observed annually on June 16 to honour the memory of the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa, where students protested against poor-quality education and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. The peaceful demonstration was met with violence, leading to the deaths of hundreds of school children. In recognition of their courage and sacrifice, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) instituted the day in 1991.
Beyond remembrance, the day serves as a platform to reflect on the realities facing children across Africa today, including challenges in education, healthcare, protection, and access to basic services. It also calls for governments, institutions, and communities to take meaningful action to improve children’s rights and wellbeing.

The Day of the African Child is marked every year with a selected theme developed through consultations that include children’s voices from African Union member states. This ensures that the commemoration reflects their lived experiences and priorities.

The 2026 theme, “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa,” highlights the urgent need to provide safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene services. These essentials are critical to preventing disease, improving school attendance, and ensuring healthy development for children across the continent.

Despite progress in some regions, many children in Africa still lack access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities, especially in rural and underserved communities. These gaps continue to affect health outcomes and educational opportunities.

As the continent observes this day, the message remains clear: remembering the past must translate into action that secures dignity, safety, and equal opportunities for every African child.
