The Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming lives within Nigeria’s correctional system by sponsoring 226 inmates to sit for the General Certificate Examination (GCE). The formal presentation of the sponsorship was made to Ope Fatinikun, Assistant Controller General of Corrections, Zone A Command. According to CELSIR’s Executive Director, Joke Aladesanmi, the beneficiaries were selected from correctional facilities across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Rivers, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Aladesanmi stressed the transformative power of education, noting that learning equips incarcerated individuals with knowledge, confidence, employable skills, and a renewed sense of purpose. “This is the foundation for building a more productive life after incarceration,” she said. The initiative is part of CELSIR’s Education for Correctional Centres Programme, a flagship project aimed at broadening access to quality learning opportunities for justice-impacted persons. By supporting inmates through formal education, CELSIR hopes to improve rehabilitation outcomes and reduce recidivism rates across the country. Source: PUNCH NG
