Every year on October 5, the world pauses to celebrate the backbone of education – teachers. World Teachers’ Day not only honors the dedication of educators across the globe but also marks the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers. This landmark framework set global standards for teachers’ rights, responsibilities, preparation, and working conditions. In 1997, it was expanded to include higher-education personnel, ensuring all educators had a voice. Since 1994, the day has stood as a reminder of the vital role teachers play in shaping societies.
This celebration is more than a tribute; it is a call to action. It’s a moment to recognize how teachers transform education while reflecting on the support they need to thrive. It is also an opportunity to rethink how the profession can adapt to the challenges of the future.

The theme for this year, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” underscores the power of working together. It highlights how collaboration – among teachers, schools, and education systems – strengthens learning outcomes and fosters professional growth. Policies and environments that encourage shared expertise and mutual support are not just beneficial; they are essential to the future of teaching and learning.

As we mark World Teachers’ Day, let us not only celebrate our teachers but also commit to supporting them with the respect, resources, and recognition they deserve. For when teachers rise, education rises – and with it, the future of our world.
