Mental health is the cornerstone of human well-being. It allows us to handle stress, unlock our abilities, learn, work productively, and contribute to society. Yet, it is shaped by a complex mix of risks and protective factors that touch every stage of life. On a personal level, genetics, substance use, and emotional skills can increase vulnerability. Social and environmental pressures such as poverty, violence, and inequality further raise risks, while childhood experiences like harsh parenting or bullying can leave lasting impacts. At the same time, protective factors—supportive relationships, strong communities, safe environments, education, and meaningful work—build resilience and strengthen mental health.
These forces do not act alone. Local struggles affect families and individuals, while global challenges such as economic downturns, disease outbreaks, displacement, and climate change weigh heavily on entire populations. No single factor determines outcomes, but together, they shape mental health across a lifetime. Since its first observance in 1992, World Mental Health Day has become a platform to raise awareness, fight stigma, and inspire global action. Each year, the World Health Organization and partners spotlight an urgent theme. For 2025, the theme is “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” It underscores the critical need to provide mental health and psychosocial support in times of conflict, disaster, and forced displacement. In crises, mental health care is not optional—it is essential.
