Celebrating World Mental Health Day 2024

World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, serves as a pivotal international event dedicated to mental health education, awareness, and the fight against social stigma. Initiated in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health, this day has garnered support from individuals and organizations in over 150 countries. Each October, thousands of advocates come together to highlight the significant impact of mental health issues on people's lives worldwide and to promote the importance of prioritizing mental health.

The inaugural celebration in 1992 was spearheaded by Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter and initially focused on general advocacy and public education about mental health. It wasn't until 1994 that World Mental Health Day adopted a specific theme, thanks to then-Secretary General Eugene Brody. The theme that year was "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World," marking the beginning of targeted initiatives to enhance mental health support globally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) plays a crucial role in supporting World Mental Health Day. Through its extensive network of health ministries and civil society organizations, WHO raises awareness about mental health issues and provides essential technical and communication resources.

This year, the theme for World Mental Health Day is "It is Time To Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace". In partnership with WHO, the emphasis is on the critical connection between mental health and the workplace. Recognizing that safe and supportive work environments are vital for maintaining mental well-being, this year's campaign seeks to promote mental health as a priority in professional settings worldwide.
