 A humanitarian is someone committed to reducing suffering and protecting human life and dignity. Humanitarians include aid workers, healthcare professionals, volunteers and everyday people who support others during crises such as conflicts, natural disasters and health emergencies. World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on 19 August, honours humanitarian workers and remembers those who have lost their lives while serving others. The day commemorates the 2003 bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad, which killed Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 other colleagues.
The theme for World Humanitarian Day 2026 is “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.” It draws attention to the growing threats faced by civilians and humanitarian workers and calls for stronger protection, accountability and support for communities responding to crises. The day also reminds us that humanitarian action is not limited to aid organizations. Supporting humanitarian initiatives, volunteering, spreading awareness and helping vulnerable people are all meaningful ways to contribute.
