Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the world’s leading cause of death, claiming more than 17.9 million lives globally each year. While heart disease is often associated with older adults, conditions such as hypertension, heart attacks and stroke are increasingly affecting younger people.
Several factors contribute to cardiovascular disease, including unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, chronic stress and poorly managed diabetes.

The global campaign for heart health awareness was established through the efforts of the World Heart Federation (WHF) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The first World Heart Day was observed on September 29, 2000, with the aim of drawing global attention to cardiovascular disease and encouraging people to take action to protect their heart health.

Since then, September 29 has become an annual opportunity for health organisations, governments, communities and individuals across the world to promote cardiovascular health and highlight ways to reduce the risk of heart disease.

This year, the World Heart Day theme is, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” which continues the World Heart Federation’s multi-year campaign on cardiovascular health. The theme reinforces the importance of paying attention to heart health and taking timely action when risk factors or warning signs emerge.

Beyond raising awareness, the campaign encourages people to make heart health part of their everyday lives by eating healthier, staying physically active, avoiding tobacco, managing stress and keeping conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes under control.

World Heart Day serves as a reminder that heart health is not only a concern when symptoms appear. Regular health checks can help identify risk factors early, while timely medical attention can improve the chances of preventing serious complications.

As the world observes World Heart Day 2026 on September 29, the message is clear: protecting the heart requires awareness, healthy choices and timely action. By understanding the risks and taking steps to manage them, individuals and communities can help reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and save lives.

This World Heart Day, don’t miss a beat, know your risks, care for your heart and act early.
