Every year on June 7, the world comes together to observe World Food Safety Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safe food and the role it plays in protecting public health. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 and first celebrated in 2019, the day encourages action to prevent, detect, and respond to foodborne risks that affect millions of people worldwide. The roots of this observance can be traced back to 1945 with the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A major milestone followed in 1962 when the FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) created the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which set internationally recognized food safety standards and guidelines. Costa Rica later played a key role in championing the resolution that led to the creation of World Food Safety Day.
Food safety extends far beyond preventing illness. It supports food security, strengthens economies, promotes sustainable agriculture, facilitates international trade, and contributes to tourism and development. It is a shared responsibility that involves governments, food producers, businesses, and consumers working together to ensure food remains safe from farm to table. The theme for World Food Safety Day 2026, "From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere," highlights the need for science-based and data-driven solutions to tackle foodborne diseases. Led jointly by WHO and FAO, this year's campaign calls for stronger food safety systems, informed decision-making, and greater collaboration to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to safe food. As the world continues to face evolving food safety challenges, World Food Safety Day serves as a reminder that safe food is essential for healthier lives, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.
