Blood is the life force of every living being. Every year, millions of people die as a result of lack of blood transfusion or blood shortage. Hospitals as well as other healthcare agencies rely so much on the voluntary donations of blood by people in order to save lives. Around 118.5 million blood donations are collected globally every year. About 60% of these are donated in low- and middle-income countries where some 84% of the world’s population lives. The average blood donation rate is more than 6.3 times greater in high-income countries than in low-income countries
The World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on the 14th of June every year as a means of creating awareness amongst people to help save lives. The theme of this year's World Blood Donor Day is tagged: "20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!" The 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day is an excellent and timely opportunity to thank blood donors across the world for their life-saving donations over the years and honour the profound impact on both patients and donors. It is also a moment to address continued challenges, and accelerate progress towards a future where safe blood transfusion is universally accessible. To donate blood in Nigeria, some of the NGOs that encourage voluntary donations include:Safe Blood for Africa Foundation, Action on Blood, The Alliance for Medical Action ( ALIMA) and so on.
