Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interactions. While individuals with autism may face challenges such as difficulty with eye contact, social cues, and changes in routine, they also have unique strengths that should be recognized and supported.
About 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism and boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to receive a diagnosis. While some stereotypes about autism including believing that all autistic people are the same, lacking intelligence and empathy, autistic people can live a fulfilled and meaningful life.

To promote awareness and inclusion, the United Nations established World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2007. This day serves as a global platform to highlight the experiences of autistic individuals and advocate for a more inclusive society.

This year’s theme, "Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," focuses on how embracing neurodiversity contributes to global progress. By implementing inclusive policies in education, employment, and healthcare, society can create opportunities for autistic individuals to thrive.

Autism is not an illness but a neurodevelopmental difference. While its exact cause is unknown, genetics play a significant role. Rather than focusing on limitations, society should foster an environment that accommodates the diverse needs of autistic individuals.

World Autism Awareness Day is not just about recognition—it’s about action. By embracing neurodiversity and creating inclusive spaces, we can ensure that autistic individuals have the opportunity to lead meaningful, successful lives.
