The United Nations defines youth as individuals aged 15 to 24, a crucial stage of life marked by rapid physical, emotional, and social growth. Globally, there are about 1.2 billion young people in this age group, representing 16% of the world’s population. Despite diverse backgrounds and experiences, youth everywhere share common needs, access to quality education, good health, employment opportunities, and gender equality.
The idea of dedicating a day to celebrate and support young people dates back to 1991, when participants at the first World Youth Forum of the United Nations in Vienna, Austria, proposed an International Youth Day. Their vision was to use the day for awareness campaigns, fundraising, and strengthening youth-focused initiatives through the United Nations Youth Fund.

This vision gained momentum in 1998 at the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon, Portugal. A resolution was adopted proclaiming 12 August as International Youth Day, a decision later endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1999. Since then, the day has been marked annually with themes that spotlight the role of young people in shaping the world.

The 2025 theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” underscores the power of youth-led initiatives at the community level. It calls on young people to take meaningful action, not only to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also to inspire change that extends far beyond them.

From climate action to social justice, International Youth Day 2025 celebrates the energy, creativity, and determination of young people to drive progress, proving that local action can spark global transformation. This August 12, let’s not just celebrate youth, let’s empower them. Whether you’re a policymaker, educator, entrepreneur, or community member, take a step to support a young person’s vision, amplify their voice, and fuel their capacity to change the world. The future is not just ahead of us, it’s in their hands, and it starts now.
