The movement gained international momentum in 1910 when German activist Clara Zetkin proposed the establishment of a global observance. The first official IWD took place on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. By 1921, March 8 was formally designated as the annual date for IWD. The theme for International Women’s Day 2025, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the urgency of implementing strategies, resources, and initiatives that drive meaningful progress for women worldwide. It serves as a global call to action, encouraging societies to support and elevate efforts that advance gender equality.
