In a world where everyone is constantly busy and overwhelmed by daily struggles, some people still find the time to show up for others. They are called volunteers—people who choose to serve, support causes, and give their time, energy, and resources freely, without expecting payment. International Volunteer Day (IVD) is celebrated every year on December 5. It began in 1985 as an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is set aside to recognize volunteers and promote the spirit of volunteerism at the local, national, and global levels. The United Nations Volunteers also joins in the celebrations—standing with volunteers all over the world and highlighting the power of people-led solutions to shared challenges.
This year, under the inspiring theme “Every Contribution Matters,” International Volunteer Day 2025 takes on even greater meaning as it marks the official global launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026). This milestone follows UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/78/127, which calls for a global movement to recognize and strengthen the role of volunteers in driving progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Volunteering is for every one of us. No effort is too small, no contribution is meaningless. Let’s each give our own quota—because together, we can make our society one step better.
