It plays a crucial role in empowering individuals and societies, extending beyond basic education rights to significantly enhance life opportunities. Improved literacy levels contribute to poverty reduction, increased workforce participation, and better health and sustainable development outcomes. International Literacy Day, established at the “World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy” in Tehran, Iran, in 1965, was officially designated by UNESCO as September 8 the following year.
The day serves as a global reminder of literacy's importance for individuals, communities, and societies, while emphasizing the ongoing need for heightened efforts to achieve greater literacy rates. The theme for International Literacy Day 2024 is “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.” This year’s theme underscores the role of multilingual education in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing social cohesion, and promoting global peace. To observe International Literacy Day, individuals and communities can participate in various activities such as sending supportive messages to educators, creating or contributing to digital libraries, and joining reading clubs.
