The International Day of Zero Waste, observed annually on March 30, promotes waste prevention and sustainable resource management. The initiative, rooted in the zero-waste movement, emphasizes redesigning product life cycles to ensure repurposing and reuse, ultimately reducing landfill waste and environmental pollution. On December 14, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly officially established the International Day of Zero Waste, following a resolution led by Türkiye and 105 other nations. The initiative aligns with other UN efforts to combat pollution, including the UN Environment Assembly’s resolution on ending plastic pollution. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat oversee the observance, encouraging global participation.
The observance calls on governments, UN organizations, businesses, civil society, academia, and youth to support zero-waste initiatives at all levels. The theme this year is tagged “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles” and it highlights the environmental and social impact of the industry’s linear business model, which fuels overproduction and overconsumption. By raising awareness and promoting sustainable solutions, the International Day of Zero Waste aims to drive global action toward a circular economy and a cleaner planet. Source: UN
