The Government of Canada has expressed strong interest in expanding youth-focused digital and technical empowerment programmes in Nigeria following a high-level visit to the Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) hub at Yaba College of Technology. The visit by Randeep Sarai, conducted in partnership with UNICEF and Generation Unlimited, was aimed at assessing the impact of youth innovation programmes and exploring opportunities to scale them across Nigeria.
Welcoming the delegation, Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, described Nigerian youths as “diamonds” whose talents must be refined through education, innovation and technical skills development. He said the institution has continued to promote female participation in ICT, engineering and digital innovation, adding that YABATECH was the first tertiary institution in Nigeria selected as a flagship centre for the programme. Some beneficiaries also shared inspiring success stories, including a young web developer who reportedly earned about N150,000 from a FinTech project after participating in the initiative, while another former trainee now runs a phone repair business after previously hawking goods on Lagos streets.
