African Medical Centre of Excellence Treats Over 5,000 Patients from 20 Countries in First Year

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), Abuja, has treated more than 5,000 patients from over 20 countries across four continents within its first year of operation, underscoring growing confidence in Africa’s ability to provide world-class specialist healthcare

The milestone was announced in a statement following the visit of the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Dr. George Elombi, to the facility in Abuja.

Developed by Afreximbank in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, the AMCE was established to strengthen specialist healthcare across Africa through advanced clinical services, research, medical education and reduced dependence on overseas treatment.

According to the Centre, its first year has recorded several landmark achievements, including West Africa’s first Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for lung cancer, its first complex triple coronary artery bypass surgery, two successful stem cell transplants and expanded access to advanced cardiac care. The hospital also processed over 40,000 diagnostic tests and has introduced nuclear medicine services, with PET/CT imaging expected to commence later this year.

Speaking during the visit, Elombi said the Centre’s achievements demonstrate that Africa has the expertise and institutional capacity to deliver healthcare that meets global standards, reaffirming Afreximbank’s commitment to investing in the continent’s healthcare infrastructure.
