At least 200 youths in Kwara State have commenced a 12-week workforce development programme aimed at equipping young people with practical digital skills and improving their access to employment opportunities. The training, organised by the Ilorin Innovation Hub with support from IHS Nigeria, is the first cohort of the Hub’s Technical Workforce Development Programme (TWDP).
The beneficiaries were selected from more than 5,000 applications received for the programme, reflecting significant interest among young people seeking opportunities to develop relevant workplace and digital skills. The programme focuses on four key areas: data analysis, virtual assistance, content creation and digital marketing. According to the organisers, the training is designed not only to build participants’ technical capabilities but also to strengthen their employability and entrepreneurial capacity. Speaking at the opening of the programme in Ilorin, Zumah Yahaya, Director of Programmes at the Ilorin Innovation Hub, said the initiative was structured to go beyond conventional skills acquisition. Yahaya explained that the programme seeks to establish a direct pathway between training and employment by preparing participants with practical skills that can be applied in the workplace. The initiative forms part of efforts to provide young people with skills relevant to the evolving digital economy while creating opportunities for them to participate more effectively in the workforce. With 200 participants selected for the inaugural cohort, the Technical Workforce Development Programme is expected to provide intensive training across its four focus areas over the next 12 weeks.
